Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener And Australian National Cricket Team Player Matthew Hayden didn’t hold back while speaking about former CSK captain MS Dhoni’s form in the ongoing IPL 2025. Hayden who was on commentary duty during CSK’s match against Delhi Capitals stated that Dhoni should consider retirement, saying, “It’s over for him.”

The remarks came after Dhoni scored an unbeaten 30 off 26 balls failing to steer CSK home in a chase of 184 at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium. The 43-year-old came in at No. 7 when his team was in trouble but struggled to build momentum. His innings included one six, one four and six dot balls raising questions over his ability to finish games.
“(MS) Dhoni should join us in our commentary box after this game. He has lost the cricket. It’s over for him. He should accept this fact until it's too late for CSK,” Hayden reportedly said during the broadcast. However, this quote could not be independently verified.
Despite the criticism CSK head coach Stephen Fleming backed Dhoni making it clear that any retirement call will come from Dhoni himself.
“No, that’s not my role to put an end to it,” said Fleming when asked about Dhoni’s future. “I have no idea. I'm just enjoying working with him. He's still going strong. I don't even ask these days. You guys are the ones that ask.”
With Ruturaj Gaikwad-led CSK enduring their third loss of the season the pressure is mounting on both the team and its veterans. Dhoni’s form and role in the team will likely remain a hot topic in the coming weeks.
