Only Six Teams Allowed: Bangladesh’s Olympic Cricket Hopes in Doubt

Many people in Bangladesh were filled with hope when they heard the news.  People in this country love cricket more than any other sport.  After 128 years, cricket was finally added to the Olympics. Fans were excited about the chance to see the red and green flag fly high on the prize platform.  The truth, on the other hand, might be very different.

Bangladesh may still have to wait a long time for an Olympic prize, even though cricket, the sport that means the most to the country, is finally coming to the Olympics after more than a hundred years.  It will be back at the Olympics in 2028 in Los Angeles, but there's a catch: only six teams will be able to compete in each of the men's and women's T20 games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the people in charge of planning Los Angeles 2028 chose the T20 style because it fits with the fast-paced and popular sport of cricket around the world.  But because there are only six spots left in the final round, it will be very tough to qualify.  If only ICC T20I scores are used to choose teams, which seems likely, Bangladesh will have a hard time.

At the moment, Bangladesh are ranked ninth in the men's T20I.  There are some big countries in the top six, including India, Australia, England, South Africa, and New Zealand.  West Indies are an interesting case because, even though it's in the top six, it might not be eligible because it's made up of players from several Caribbean countries.  This makes people wonder if smaller countries, like Jamaica or Barbados, could join instead.

Bangladesh probably won't be able to go to the Olympics unless their performance improves a lot or the rules for qualifying change. If this happens, they will miss out on another chance to win a medal on the world's biggest sports scene.

For the first time since 1900, cricket was part of the Olympics. Great Britain won gold and France won silver.  That was the last time it happened. There was an attempt to bring it back at the 1986 Athens Games, but not enough teams showed up.

Ironically, the sport is being brought back, but only with six teams for each gender. This is happening even though T20 leagues and international cricket are becoming very popular around the world.

Fans in Bangladesh can only hope for a huge surprise in the rankings or a chance method since Los Angeles 2028 is still four years away.  The dream of hearing the national song on an Olympic cricket podium will stay painfully far away until then.
