Bangladesh cricket history will remember April 10, 2025, as a day when records were broken, teams dominated, and a first in the history of women's ODIs was played. The Bangladesh women's cricket team made a strong statement by beating Thailand by 178 runs in their first match of the ICC Women's World Cup Qualifiers. It was their biggest win in ODI history.
In ODI cricket for women, it was the first time that two bowlers from the same team shared five-wicket hauls in the same game. This happened only twice in all international forms. Fahima Khatun and Jannatul Ferdus made cricket history when they each took 5 wickets and helped beat Thailand by 93 runs.
In men's international cricket, this rare event happened only once before, in 1977, when Gary Cosier and Greg Chappell both took 5 wickets against England.
Bangladesh made a huge 271 for 3 when they were put in to bat at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground earlier. It was their best score ever in a women's ODI.
Nigar Sultana Joty, the captain, was in great form. She scored 101 runs in just 80 balls, hitting 15 fours and a six. This was the fastest century in the history of Bangladesh women's ODIs. Sharmin Akhter, the opening, and she put together a 152-run stand. Akhter was still unbeaten on 94 off 126 balls.
Sharmin and Fargana Hoque had scored 104 runs together before they were bowled out. Thailand's bowlers couldn't stop Bangladesh's openers, who were aggressive without getting out of hand.
Bangladesh's best score before this game was 252, which they got against Ireland in Mirpur last November. The 271 runs scored were only the third time in ODIs that Bangladeshi women scored more than 250 runs.
With a huge goal to defend, Bangladesh's bowlers made quick work of Thailand's chase. The batting order was destroyed by Fahima Khatun and Jannatul Ferdus, who took all ten wickets (5 each) and bowled out Thailand for just 93 runs.
Together, they not only won the match by a huge 178 runs, but they also set a world record that will never be broken in the history of women's ODIs.
With this big win, Bangladesh are now in first place in the points table. On April 13, they will play Ireland.
