Rishabh Pant is set to become the new captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, according to the latest reports. The dynamic wicketkeeper-batter was signed for a record-breaking INR 27 crore ($3.21 million) at the December auction in Jeddah, making him the most expensive player in IPL history.

Pant's appointment as captain is expected to be officially announced soon. This will be his second stint as an IPL captain, having previously led the Delhi Capitals (DC) from 2021 to 2024. During his time with DC, Pant played 111 matches, accumulating 3,284 runs at a strike rate of 148.93, making him the franchise's all-time leading run-scorer.

LSG’s decision to bring in Pant as their skipper comes after a disappointing 2024 season, where the team finished in seventh place. KL Rahul, who had captained the side since its IPL debut, led them to the playoffs in their first two seasons but fell short of reaching the final. 

The franchise hopes that Pant’s leadership and aggressive style will provide a fresh perspective and help them secure their first-ever IPL title.

Pant will work alongside head coach Justin Langer and newly appointed mentor Zaheer Khan. The team boasts a strong overseas contingent, featuring stars like David Miller, Mitchell Marsh, and Aiden Markram, adding to their hopes of a successful season.

Pant's move to LSG came after a fierce bidding war with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), forcing LSG to raise their offer to a staggering INR 27 crore. Delhi Capitals attempted to retain him using their right-to-match card but were ultimately outbid.

As the 2025 IPL season approaches, all eyes will be on Rishabh Pant to see if he can lead LSG to their first title and live up to the expectations set by his record-breaking price tag.
