We don’t categorize teams as big or small: Shanto warns against underrating Zimbabwe

Bangladesh Test and ODI captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has reminded fans, players, and the media that no foreign team, not even Zimbabwe, should be taken lightly. This comes as Bangladesh get ready to meet Zimbabwe for a two-match Test series in April.

Zimbabwe might not be as dangerous as top teams like Australia or South Africa, but Shanto stressed that every match, no matter who they play, is very important for Bangladesh's growth in Test cricket.

“Every international series is a challenge,” Shanto told reporters during a break in his Dhaka Premier League (DPL) commitments. “The same pressure and mindset we apply when playing against big teams should be present here as well. No team is small. Our focus is on how well we can prepare and execute.”

Historically, Bangladesh has enjoyed success against Zimbabwe both home and away. However, Shanto was quick to point out that past performance doesn’t guarantee future dominance. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — we don’t categorize teams as big or small. Zimbabwe is just another international opponent, and we’re approaching the series with the seriousness it deserves.”

Bangladesh has had both good and bad times in Tests in 2024.  The Tigers had some great wins away from home, like a 2-0 series win over Pakistan and a tie series against the West Indies. But their performance at home wasn't as good.  After losing to South Africa, they lost to Sri Lanka and lost by a huge score.

Despite those setbacks, Shanto sees improvement, “Last year, we won three Test matches, which is a positive sign. This year we have six more. If we focus on continuous growth, regardless of the opposition, our Test cricket will evolve.”

Several national players remain engaged in the Dhaka Premier League leading up to the Zimbabwe series, raising concerns about preparation time. Shanto acknowledged this challenge but also saw the domestic competition as valuable in its own right. “Of course, more time for Test preparation would’ve helped. But at the same time, the Abahani vs. Mohammedan game is hugely important for the fans. Players already selected are mentally preparing themselves. That mindset is crucial.”

Three Bangladesh players — Litton Das, Rishad Hossain, and Nahid Rana — are heading to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) around the time of the Zimbabwe series. While Litton will miss the series entirely, the others will join PSL after the first Test. Shanto, however, sees this as a positive opportunity for player development.

“Honestly, I’m thrilled for them. Playing in top-level franchise leagues helps build confidence and skills. Of course, national duty comes first, but if such chances arise without compromising the team’s commitments, then I fully support it. Hopefully, more of our players will get similar opportunities in the future.”
