BCCI Shows No Mercy to Sanju Samson as Rajasthan Royals Repeat Costly Mistake

Rajasthan Royals faced a tough outing on Wednesday as they slumped to a 58-run defeat against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With this comprehensive victory Shubman Gill-led GT climbed to the top of the IPL 2025 points table while RR endured their third loss of the season.

It was a forgettable evening for captain Sanju Samson who not only saw his team struggle on the field but also received a fine of INR 24 lakhs for a slow over-rate his second such offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct. According to the IPL release,
"As this was his team’s second offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Samson was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser," the statement added.
The match was only Sanju Samson’s second game as full-time captain in IPL 2025 having handed over duties to Riyan Parag in the first few matches. The BCCI’s slow over-rate fine added to his woes after an already disappointing loss on the field.
Talking about the game After being invited to bat first Gujarat Titans posted an imposing 217/6 in their 20 overs. The star of the innings was Sai Sudharsan who played a classy knock of 82 off 53 balls. He found support from Jos Buttler and Shahrukh Khan both of whom scored 36 runs. Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan provided a late flourish to take GT past 210.
Chasing 218 Rajasthan Royals could only muster 159 runs in 19.2 overs, folding up 58 runs short.
