The National Selection Panel (NSP) has named a 17-man squad for the Qantas Tour of England, which includes the final of the ICC World Test Championship and the opening of two Ashes Tests.
Ahead of the all-important World Test Championship (WTC) final against India at the Oval, Australia have announced their 17-man squad for the marquee clash. In particular, all-rounders Mitchell Marsh, Josh Inglis and opener Marcus Harris were called back by team management before the English summer.
David Warner was included in Australia's 17-man touring party for the ICC World Test Championship final against India at The Oval and the first two Ashes Tests.
Warner remains in frame to be selected for the World Test Championship finals, which begin June 7, after recovering from an elbow injury sustained during the Test series in India in February.
Pat Cummins will return to captain the squad after leaving the tour of India early and completing the third and fourth tests to be with his ailing mother in Australia.
Notably, senior batter Steven Smith will play a couple of County Championship games to keep him ready for the big UK tour. Test number one Marnus Labuschagne will also feature in England's domestic campaign, as will Marcus Harris, who is set to return to the Australia Test squad after a long layoff.
According to Cricket Australia, the squad will convene in England at the end of May and will be reduced there to 15 members in line with ICC requirements.
"The World Test Championship is the culmination of more than two years of consistent Test level performance by the team and individuals involved, resulting in an Ashes series that is always highly anticipated," said George Bailey, Chairman of the National Selection Committee, today as quoted by Cricket Australia.
"The UK is a very different undertaking to our last tour of India and some of the changes are based on the conditions we anticipate," said Australian selection committee chairman George Bailey.
Given the short time between the WTC Finals and the first Ashes Test, and the length of the tour, we see value in revisiting the squad after the second Ashes Test.
Australia play India in the final of the World Test Championship at the Oval from June 7-11 before taking on England in the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston from June 16-20.
