Gavaskar one of India’s greatest cricketing icons has promised to support Kambli through the CHAMPS Foundation an organization dedicated to helping former international athletes. And he’s not just making promises he’s already acted.
According to a Times of India report the CHAMPS Foundation under Gavaskar’s guidance will now provide Kambli with a monthly allowance of ₹30,000 for the rest of his life. On top of that, the foundation will offer an additional ₹30,000 annually to cover Kambli’s medical expenses a much-needed lifeline during this difficult phase.
Kambli who once shared the spotlight with Sachin Tendulkar during their early years has seen his career and health take a downturn in recent times. He was hospitalized in December 2024 due to urinary issues and cramps spending nearly two weeks under medical care before being discharged on January 1.
This isn’t the first time cricket has rallied behind him Tendulkar has also extended financial help in the past. But Gavaskar’s commitment truly stands out.
Anil Joshi Gavaskar’s close friend shared that the former Indian captain met Kambli at the Wankhede Stadium and later followed up with his doctors. After understanding the full extent of Kambli’s health struggles Gavaskar immediately instructed CHAMPS Foundation to begin providing support.
"Gavaskar had wanted to help Kambli ever since he learned about his deteriorating health last year. A day after their meeting at Wankhede Stadium, Gavaskar met two of Kambli's doctors - Dr. Shailesh Thakur and another physician - and me. After being fully briefed on his condition, he instructed the CHAMPS Foundation to immediately begin financial and medical assistance," Joshi told TOI.
