Legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting has expressed his surprise over the release of prominent players like Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction.
Speaking on The ICC Review, Ponting noted how the franchises appear to be changing their strategies by parting ways with their key players, despite their previous leadership roles. Ponting also shared insights on MS Dhoni’s evolving role with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), suggesting Dhoni may take on a mentoring role for the team moving forward.
Surprising Releases: Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul
Ricky Ponting, who himself has a rich history with the IPL, was surprised when he saw that players like Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul were not retained by their respective teams ahead of the 2025 auction. These players have been significant leaders for their franchises, with Pant leading the Delhi Capitals, Iyer captaining the Kolkata Knight Riders, and Rahul heading the Lucknow Super Giants.
"Teams and players seem to be parting ways for their own betterment. I was quite surprised that Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer will be available in the auction. Both are top talents, and their absence from the retention list is surprising," Ponting remarked.
Franchises Shifting Strategies
The decision to release these high-profile players has raised questions about the franchises' new strategies. Ponting believes the shift signals a change in direction for some teams. “It seems like individuals or franchises are moving in different directions with their players. It’s surprising to see players like KL Rahul not being retained. He’s been a key player for his team," Ponting said.
MS Dhoni’s Future with Chennai Super Kings
Ponting also commented on MS Dhoni's situation with CSK, stating that Dhoni might not play every match but will continue to play a significant leadership role, potentially as a mentor. "MS Dhoni evolved as a player over the last few seasons. While he may not feature in every game, his leadership and influence, both on and off the field, make him crucial for CSK. Whether he's playing or on the sidelines, Dhoni's presence will be invaluable to the team," Ponting added.
