In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 48th match between the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Ekana International Stadium, the MI captain Hardik Pandya's side failed to maintain the required over-rate, leading to the hefty fine. Adding to the woes, Pandya's teammates also found themselves in the dock, with fines ranging from ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is lesser.
This is Pandya's second over-rate offence of the season, which highlights the difficulties the Mumbai Indians have in keeping the game moving at the necessary tempo. In their official statement, the IPL administrators emphasised how crucial it is to follow over-rate rules in order to guarantee a smooth run of matches.
Here is the Official Statement By IPL
"Mr Hardik Pandya, Captain, Mumbai Indians has been fined afterduring Match 48 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Lucknow Super Giants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on April 30, 2024. As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Pandya was fined Rs 24 Lakh. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 6 Lac or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser."
It must be noted that Lucknow Super Giants won the match by 4 wickets In a crucial encounter, KL Rahul's decision to put Mumbai Indians to bat first paid dividends as they stumbled to 27-4 early on. Nehal Wadhera and Tim David's gritty knocks salvaged the innings, propelling MI to a modest total. However, it wasn't enough to thwart Lucknow Super Giants, who chased down the target of 144 with four wickets in hand. Hardik Pandya's valiant efforts with the ball, accounting for key wickets, couldn't prevent Marcus Stoinis' match-winning innings of 62 runs off 45 balls.
