Taskin Ahmed’s big leap in ICC Rankings highlights Bangladesh’s positives

The latest ICC Test player rankings have brought significant changes, with India's Jasprit Bumrah dethroning Kagiso Rabada to become the top-ranked Test bowler. Despite Bangladesh's heavy defeat to West Indies, Taskin Ahmed has made a massive leap, climbing 16 places in the bowling rankings. However, Taijul Islam, Shakib Al Hasan, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz experienced declines in their bowling ranks.
Meanwhile, Mehidy Hasan Miraz made a notable improvement in the ICC Test all-rounder rankings, climbing to joint third alongside Shakib. Both Bangladeshi players now share a rating of 269.
Jasprit Bumrah showcased exceptional bowling in India’s commanding 295-run victory against Australia in Perth. His eight-wicket haul, combined with his captaincy, earned him the Player of the Match award and propelled him from third to first in the Test bowler rankings with 883 rating points.
South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada slipped to second place with 872 points, followed by Australia’s Josh Hazlewood, now in third with 860. Ravichandran Ashwin moved up to fourth, courtesy of Pat Cummins’ two-spot drop, while Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya climbed to fifth after an impressive series against Pakistan.
In the first Test against West Indies, Bangladesh suffered a heavy 201-run defeat. Yet, Taskin Ahmed’s performance stood out, pushing him up 16 spots to 51st in the ICC Test bowler rankings with a rating of 383.
West Indies pacers also saw gains: Jayden Seales climbed three spots to 11th, and Kemar Roach advanced four places to 17th. Conversely, Taijul Islam dropped five places to 23rd, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan slid to 26th and 34th, respectively.
On the batting front, Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das are now Bangladesh's highest-ranked batters, sharing 32nd place. Mushfiqur fell one spot, while Litton advanced by the same margin. Mominul Haque also improved, rising to 47th, while Shakib dropped two spots to 57th.
Elsewhere, West Indies’ Alick Athanaze rose 18 spots to 62nd, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz advanced one place to 67th.
Joe Root continues to dominate the ICC Test batting rankings with 903 points. India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal climbed to a career-best second place after a brilliant 161-run knock in Perth, while Travis Head’s 89-run innings pushed him into the top 10 at 10th.
Virat Kohli’s 30th Test century saw him jump nine spots to 13th, while Australian stars Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja, and Marnus Labuschagne experienced drops, now ranked seventh, 12th, and 14th, respectively.
