Ireland have registered a famous win against England in a rain-hit game of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 on Wednesday (October 26) at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). They beat the English by 5 wickets to grab their first victory against them. Before this match, they only faced off once in T20I in ICC T20 World Cup 2010 which ended in a no-result because of the same reason as today- rain.

There was a rain prediction in the game before and just after the toss, the rain started. Though it didn’t force much delay, the game started 20 minutes after the scheduled time. The pacers of England found it difficult to use the seam movement and pace of the MCG wicket and Ireland capitalized on it. Paul Stirling was dismissed by Mark Wood after scoring 14 runs off 8 balls, but Ireland kept going with a healthy run-rate of around 9.

Captain Andy Balbirnie and Lorcan Tucker made a match-winning 82-run partnership for the second wicket. However, an unlucky run-out of Tucker gave England a breather and they came back into the match from that point. Tucker scored 34 runs off 27 balls. Harry Tector got out for a duck in the next over.

Balbirnie hit a half-century and with Curtis Campher tried to tackle the situation. But he was also dismissed in the 16th over of the match after scoring 62 runs off 47 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes and Ireland lost their last 6 wickets for just 25 runs in which Liam Livingstone, Wood, and Sam Curran all took two wickets each.

Campher scored 18 runs off 11 balls. Ireland were bundled out for 157 runs in 19.2 overs. Livingstone and Wood were the picks of the bowlers with three wickets.

Chasing the target, England lost their captain and one of the best T20I batsmen in this world, Jos Buttler in the first over. He went for a duck off Josh Little’s brilliant delivery. The English batsmen struggled much against Little’s excellent seam movement as the left-arm pacer also took the wicket of another opener Alex Hales. Fionn Hand also assisted him with taking the wicket of Ben Stokes.

England scored just 37 runs in the powerplay’s 6 overs with the loss of 3 wickets. They also struggle after the powerplay as Dawid Malan and Harry Brook were always looking uncomfortable at the wicket. Both the batsmen were going run a ball and couldn’t stay longer. Brook was dismissed by George Dockrell after scoring 18 runs from 21 balls and Malan’s wicket was taken by Barry McCarthy when the clouds were looming over the MCG and England fell to 86/5.

They were always behind the DLS but Moeen Ali tried to keep his team on the right way with some attacking shots. When Moeen took 12 runs off Gareth Delany’s first three deliveries in the 15th over of the match, the rain came again, this time with more speed and England were 5 runs short of 110, the par score at this stage.

The cut-off time for the match was 15 minutes away from that stage and because of the heavy rain, umpires were unable to resume the play and declared Ireland as the winner of the match which wrote the first upset of the Super 12 stage in this year’s T20 World Cup.
