The bowlers dominated the first day of the first Test between Australia and South Africa on Saturday (December 16) in Brisbane.

After the ball-tampering scandal, this is the first Test between the two teams. Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to bowl first on a green wicket at the Gabba.

The Proteas lost four wickets for the team's 27 runs. Australian pacers- Scott Boland, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc combined to take the wickets.

Then, Temba Bavuma and Kyle Varreynne tackled the initial disaster and made a 98-run partnership for the fifth wicket. But Starc got the breakthrough wicket of Bavuma and then South Africa lost their last 5 wickets for just 27 runs.

South Africa were all out for 152 runs. Bavuma scored 38 runs and Varreynne scored 64 runs. Only these two batters scored over 10 runs in the South Africa innings. Nathan Lyon and Starc took three wickets each while Cummins and Boland got two wickets each.

In reply, Australia also lost their way in the beginning as they lost three wickets within 27 runs. Then, Steve Smith and Travis Head put on a 117-run partnership to help the hosts to take a major advantage on the first day. Head was much more aggressive in the partnership and sent the visitors to the backfoot. However, South Africa fought back with two late wickets of Steve Smith (36) and nightwatchman Boland (1).

At the end of the first day, Australia collected 145 runs after losing 5 wickets and were still behind by seven runs. Head was unbeaten on 78 runs off 77 balls. Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje both took two wickets each and Marco Janson had one.
