After a dream start to his Sunrisers Hyderabad career—striking twice in his very first over—Simarjeet Singh has certainly turned heads. However, fast-bowling coach James Franklin believes both the pacer and the team will need to figure out how they can best complement each other moving forward.

The Delhi speedster was snapped up by SRH at the mega auction in November 2024 for INR 1.50 crore. His selection came on the back of two impactful yet brief stints with Chennai Super Kings; picking up four wickets in six games in 2022 and five wickets in four games in 2024.

Sunrisers Hyderabad showed their faith in Simarjeet Singh by throwing him straight into the playing XI for their season opener on March 23. It was no easy task;bowling on a flat deck at home, where Rajasthan Royals were chasing a mammoth 287. Though he went for 46 runs in his three overs, his two wickets—and the crucial moments at which they came—would have surely pleased both SRH and fast-bowling coach James Franklin.

 Simarjeet hit the deck hard, unsettling RR’s top order right away. In his very first over, he had Yashasvi Jaiswal cutting one straight to point before bouncing out RR skipper Riyan Parag with a sharp 145 kmph delivery, which was mistimed to Pat Cummins at mid-on.

"You know, he's got some natural pace, he can move the ball through the air and if you're putting those two things together that obviously becomes quite an attractive skill set for a fast bowler to have and he's also got a few tricks up his sleeve with slower ball variations," Franklin said of Simarjeet. "So, yeah, I guess it's him getting to understand how he fits into our group. Obviously, it's his first year with us and we're trying to work out what is the best way to use him.

"The first game a couple of days ago, that first over was an unbelievable start for him getting us two massive wickets early and to set that tempo for us as a bowling group in that powerplay was massive. So, yeah, hopefully it's the start of something nice for him and for us," Franklin added.

"Having someone like Simarjit take the new ball definitely helps Pat as a captain. Again, we obviously look at our line-up and the bowling dynamics from game to game and it might not always necessarily be that way. But certainly in that first game it worked beautifully for Pat," Franklin said.
