The Australia National Cricket Team could face a major blow in the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Test, as fast bowler Mitchell Starc is in doubt due to rib and back soreness. According to CodeSports, the 34-year-old left-arm pacer was sent for scans just two days ahead of the crucial last Test, set to begin at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on January 3.

Starc, a key figure in Australia’s pace attack, battled through visible pain during the Boxing Day Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). He experienced discomfort in his ribs and back, especially on Day 3 and the final day of the match. Despite these struggles, he helped Australia clinch a win, but the toll of bowling 131.2 overs across the series has left its mark.

Although Starc took only one wicket in the Boxing Day Test, his presence in the team is critical. He will now be reassessed ahead of Australia’s upcoming two-Test tour of Sri Lanka later this month.

Glenn McGrath, the legendary Australian fast bowler, remains optimistic about Starc’s chances of playing in the final Test. Speaking to Fox Cricket, McGrath said that Starc would do everything possible to be match-ready for the New Year’s Test.

"It will be up to Mitch and the powers to be (whether he plays). He will be doing everything possible to be out in the middle. He is such a massive part of this Australian team, and when he is on fire, he is as good as anyone going around," McGrath stated.

He also emphasized how well Starc has been bowling and expressed hope that the fast bowler will recover in time.

"He’s been bowling incredibly well. Fingers crossed he has pulled up well and can get through this Test," McGrath added.

Australia holds a 2-1 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and Starc’s availability could be crucial in their bid to finish the series on a high.
