Bangladesh batting coach David Hemp provided valuable insights into the team's performance on day three of the ongoing first Test against India, explaining the stark difference between the first and second innings. Hemp highlighted how India’s quality bowling and their ability to challenge the stumps early on played a crucial role in Bangladesh's first-innings struggles.

"I think the difference between the first and the second is obviously the balls faced. Indian players, first of them, certainly challenged the stumps really well, and they knocked people over. We didn't get any significant partnerships," Hemp stated.

Bangladesh were bundled out for just 149 runs in their first innings, failing to recover from a poor start. India's Jasprit Bumrah led the bowling charge, claiming 4 wickets for 50 runs, while Akash Deep and Ravindra Jadeja picked up two each. The top-order collapse saw Shadman Islam (2), Zakir Hasan (3), Mominul Haque (0), and Mushfiqur Rahim (8) depart early, leaving Bangladesh at 40/5. Despite some resistance from Shakib Al Hasan (32), Litton Das (22), and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (27*), Bangladesh could not mount a meaningful recovery.

Hemp emphasized the need for partnerships and facing more balls, especially in challenging conditions. "The difference for the second is we got people that got in, so they faced the balls. If you're not facing balls and you got a new player coming in, what India did really well was they challenged the stumps early on and they got rewards for that."

In India's second innings, they declared at 287/4, with Shubman Gill (119*) and Rishabh Pant (109) leading the way. Bangladesh's bowlers found some success, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz claiming two wickets and Nahid Rana and Taskin Ahmed each taking one.

Reflecting on the mindset needed to combat India's bowling attack, Hemp said, "The mindset around how we approach it is that doesn't change. It's all about scoring runs. You're looking to score, so that hasn't changed. I just think that we got tested or players got tested early on in the innings in and around the stumps. That was a big difference."

As Bangladesh faced a daunting target of 515 runs in their second innings, openers Zakir Hasan (33) and Shadman Islam (35) offered a more stable start, followed by captain Najmul Hossain Shanto's unbeaten 51. Hemp praised the improvements but acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by India. "Whatever we're playing against, obviously there in India, some quality bowling, very confident side, especially playing at home. You're going to be challenged. So, it's a case of how we match that."

Hemp concluded by reinforcing the importance of scoring runs and trusting their strengths. "You have to look to score. That's what we just reinforced to the batting group in particular, to trust themselves, trust their strengths, but have that in the back of your mind. It's all about trying to score runs and how you go about that and how you approach them."

Bangladesh ended day three at 158/4, with Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan unbeaten, but a monumental task still lies ahead against a disciplined Indian attack led by Ravichandran Ashwin, who took 3 wickets for 63 runs.
