Darwin is set to stage an international cricket tournament for the first time in 17 years. Cricket Australia has booked two T20Is against South Africa in August.

International cricket is back in Darwin after a 17-year gap, as Cricket Australia has booked two T20 internationals against South Africa in August. The process for approving the tour schedule should be finalized this month, ahead of South Africa commencing its limited-overs season, which will include three T20Is and three ODIs.

Darwin is set to begin the sporting contest with two T20 internationals, with Cairns also hosting a T20 international as well as an ODI before the finishing the proceedings with two more ODIs in Mackay. Elite-class cricket is making a big comeback to the Northern Territory, building fresh enthusiasm amongst local supporters.

Northern Territory Cricket CEO Gavin Dovey has the hope of welcoming the Rainbow Nation to play an international match, as the format will be hosted at the venue once more since 2008. Dovey believes that Cricket Australia will also co-operate fully if Darwin hosts the matches.

"Since I was sworn in in 2023, it has been apparent to me that our aim is to return international cricket to the Northern Territory," Dovey was reported as saying.

The return of international cricket to Darwin would be a major occasion for the Northern Territory, with the first men's T20I cricket matches being played there and also marking Australia's 107th cricket ground. Since Darwin hosted the tournament in 2008, the region has had 536 men's and women's matches played at 27 various Australian venues.

The Top End T20 League has gained the region international recognition, and BBL clubs and foreign clubs now compete. NT Cricket CEO Gavin Dovey explained that Darwin has an "incredible winter cricket window that brings enormous benefits." The territory will mark a milestone by attracting international cricket.
