Washington Sundar, the talented 23-year-old off-spin all-rounder, will join the Indian squad in Colombo for the much-awaited Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka.
Young all-rounder Washington Sundar has reportedly replaced left-arm spinner Axar Patel in India's squad for the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. Washington Sundar is set to fly to Colombo as a reinforcement ahead of the final against Sri Lanka in the continental tournament.
Axar Patel suffered multiple injuries during the last Super Four match against Bangladesh on Friday, September 15 at the R. Premadasa Stadium. The left-handed batsman injured his hand while trying to save himself from a chance after falling off the track.
The call-up could be a good opportunity for Sundar, whose promising career in India was marred by several injuries. Recurring events also include the webbing in his bowling arm bursting. According to the latest developments, Axar has not yet been ruled out, but the injury to his wrist (bowling hand) and elbow has put his position in the playing eleven at risk.
Sundar, on the other hand, is fresh off a title-winning run in the Deodhar Trophy where he picked three wickets in the final against East Zone while defending 239 runs. Sundar is valued by the teams he plays for for his ability to bowl in the powerplay and his powerful hitting skills with the bat.
Should Sundar get the nod for the final, his off-spin bowling skills could prove invaluable, especially against Sri Lanka's left-handed batters. The pitch conditions in Colombo are known to favor the spinners, increasing anticipation of Sundar's possible inclusion.
The inclusion of Sundar at cover shows the Indian team's determination to leave no stone unturned in their quest for victory. With the Asia Cup final just around the corner, cricket fans across the world are eagerly awaiting the clash between these two cricket giants of Asia.
After completing the finals of the 2023 Asia Cup, India will face Australia in a three-match ODI series starting September 22. After the three-match ODI series, the much-awaited ODI World Cup 2023 is scheduled to begin on October 5. The opening match of the prestigious tournament will feature the finalists of the previous edition, England and New Zealand.
