Former Indian cricket team star Robin Uthappa believes that senior players should have stepped aside, allowing India to select young talents for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. He pointed out that several young cricketers have delivered outstanding performances in the ongoing IPL 2024, citing Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma as examples of players whose impressive form didn't earn them a spot in the tournament. When questioned about the exclusion of Gill and Rinku Singh from the 15-member squad, Uthappa suggested that senior players should have transitioned out after the 2022 T20 World Cup, advocating for a team comprising in-form youngsters this year.
“I'm gonna catch a lot of flak for this, but I'll take it. I think they should've moved on after the previous World Cup itself,” Uthappa said while speaking on JioCinema.
"I think the youngsters should've played in this World Cup. The senior players have had their go, and these guys are showing true potential. The fact that they've been performing in IPL consistently... a lot of these guys who are performing now, the likes of Shubman Gill should be there," Uthappa added.
Rohit Sharma is set to lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Serving as the captain, he will be supported by Hardik Pandya, who has been appointed as the vice-captain.
