Bangladesh had an average T20 World Cup this year which ended some days on June 29. They crossed the group-stage easily beating Sri Lanka, Nepal and Netherlands but lost all the matches in the Super Eight stage against Australia, India and Afghanistan. Bangladesh had the opportunity to reach the semifinals even at their last match against Afghanistan but they failed.
Although the team and the board are happy with the performance of the team in the World Cup, star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is disappointed that they did not take advantage of the opportunity to reach the semifinals.
Shakib said, “We did not get the results we expected or the results we had the chance to get. We were successful that the primary goal was met. But we could not go to the place where we had the opportunity to go. That's a bit disappointing for us.”
Shakib blames the batting unit for not going to the semifinals. He also reminded that the batters from all the teams struggled throughout the World Cup. “It was tough for the batters. I didn’t see anyone do consistently well. Many did consistently well in every other World Cup, but that was not the case in this World Cup. Maybe a batter played one game or two games better, that's how the teams won. Whoever performed on the day, the team won. As there were no high scoring matches. We also won with the contribution of one or two. The ones we didn't win, there was no such a big contribution.”
When talking about not reaching the semifinals despite a good chance, Shakib replied, “Yes, it is a big regret. It would have been great, a great achievement. It's disappointing for us from that point of view.”
