England chased down 242 with seven overs to go, thanks to half-centuries from Jason Roy, Joe Root and the captain, Eoin Morgan. The pair of Root and Morgan put on a stand of 140 runs to get England over the line in the day-night clash.
Morgan, whose last international fifty came nearly a year ago, top scored for his side with 83-ball 75*, hitting 8 fours and a six. Root played his way in his 68* off 87.
Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow set the tone for England in the chase as the duo added 76 runs for the opening wicket. Bairstow fell for 29 while Roy shone on his return to the side with a brisk 52-ball 60, striking 10 boundaries.
Sri Lanka could have made a much lower score than 241/9 had England continued to pick up wickets after early blows. Local boy Sam Curran's double-strike in his first over led Sri Lanka to losing four wickets for 21 runs inside the first powerplay.
