The England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed that Reece Topley has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup in India. Topley suffered a fracture in his left index finger, according to the ECB, which has not yet named a replacement.

England national cricket team's star player Reece Topley has been ruled out of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, in a major blow to the defending champions who have struggled in the current edition of the competition.

Reece Topley, one of the unluckiest cricketers of all time, will miss another marquee tournament due to an injury that will be debilitating for the left-arm fast bowler as he bowled brilliantly in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

Matthew Mott, England coach, confirmed that Jofra Archer will not be considered for selection after Reece Topley was ruled out for the remainder of England's ODI World Cup. Notably, Topley sustained an injury during England's clash against South Africa in Mumbai. The pacer was hit by a ball and cut his finger while diving to stop Rassie van der Dussen's rapid backward drive to the boundary.

He left the field after throwing the fifth ball over it, which also reached the boundary of the field. He returned and claimed two more wickets. However, he was not asked to bat as the defending champions suffered a crushing 229-run defeat. Meanwhile, Mott explained that Topley will not be a frontrunner in the main event and that management is in no rush to announce his replacement just yet. Furthermore, Mott also stressed that England will wait to find out who the 'X' factor will be for their team based on the outcome of the upcoming games.

"We'll have to look at the upcoming games. If there is an X-factor player we can look at - that's why we're very keen not to name the replacements and reserves, and it leaves an open mind for what we're going to go with."

“I thought Reece Topley's return to bowling with a broken finger showed great courage. We're still waiting on it, but it looks very much like it's a crack. "Certainly that's the early diagnosis, but we'll find out properly with X-rays," Mott told  at the end of the competition.

He also confirmed that Archer will not play a game at the end of the current tournament.

“Jof is actually not being considered for selection. He has come out, he has been reported to medical staff, but he will not be able to play a role at the end of this campaign,” he added.
