The year 2022 begins with a Test match between New Zealand and Bangladesh. Tourists Bangladesh have won the toss and elected to bowl first in the first Test at Bay Oval, Tauranga.
New Zealand are playing their first Test at home since winning the World Test Championship title. It is also the last Test series for Ross Taylor, who earlier announced retirement from international cricket.
New Zealand have brought in spinning all-rounder Rachin Ravindra with pacers Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and Trent Boult all playing. Devon Conway returns to the side to bat at three.
Bangladesh have three seamers - Taskin Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain and Shoriful Islam - and sole spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Taskin and Shoriful had missed the last Pakistan series at home due to injuries. Swing bowler Abu Jayed Rahi performed in the warm-up match against New Zealand XI but is unpicked for the series opener.
Batter Yasir Ali is playing his second Test after he debuted against Pakistan in November. Mahmudul Hasan Joy will open with Shadman Islam.
