Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the ODI squad for ODI series on the day of the historic Test win against Afghanistan. The young all-rounder Afif Hossain, who was dropped from the team recently, has returned to the team.
Besides, Naim Sheikh, who played only two ODIs before, has been included in the team after scoring the highest runs in the last Dhaka Premier League (DPL). However, Yasir Ali, who has been with the team for a long time, has been left out.
Besides, Shakib Al Hasan and captain Tamim Iqbal will return to the field with the ODI series after recovering from injury. Rony Talukdar, the opener who was in the team for the last series, has lost his place in the team. Mrittunjoy Chowdhury has lost his place also as Taskin Ahmed is fit and back in squad.
Left-handed batter Afif scored 550 runs in 13 innings in the last DPL. So, the selectors have taken him for the Afghan series. In the explanation, chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu said, "We already had Afif, we gave him an opportunity to play in the DPL in the middle. He got back into a good rhythm there, that's why we took him again.”
Naim performed better than Afif in the last DPL. He was the tournament's highest scorer with 932 in 16 innings The chief selector added, "Naim scored runs in DPL and is in form. So here we are balancing the two openers. Since Rony will be playing T20, we have only one place to watch before Asia Cup and World Cup, and then New Zealand. That's why we made a little change.”
With the only Test in Mirpur over, the Afghan cricketers will now travel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and camp in Abu Dhabi before the limited-overs series. The tourists will come back to Bangladesh in early July and play three ODIs and two T20Is.
