Abdullah Shafique became the first Pakistani to score a century on his World Cup debut when he scored a rescuing 113-run innings against Sri Lanka.
World Cup debutant for Pakistan Abdullah Shafique put in a big performance and once again proved why he is considered one of the best batsmen in the world by scoring a crucial goal against Sri Lanka at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket in Hyderabad, India Tuesday.
Pakistan will face Sri Lanka in the eighth match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Tuesday, October 10 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. The Babar Azam-led side was set a massive target of 345 by Sri Lanka to win the game. Pakistan were reeling at 37/2 after 7.2 overs when Abdullah Shafique was supported by Mohammad Rizwan in the middle to score a magnificent hundred.
Abdullah Shafique left an indelible mark on cricket history with a record-breaking century in his fifth One Day International (ODI). The opening batsman delivered a brilliant performance on his World Cup debut and scored his maiden ODI hundred. Shafique's century, achieved in just 97 deliveries, included 8 fours and 3 sixes and showcased his exceptional skill and adaptability.
With this, Abdullah Shafique not only recorded his maiden ODI century but also set the record of becoming the first ever Pakistani to score 100 on his World Cup debut.
His remarkable performance helped Pakistan stage a tough comeback against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad. Faced with the daunting challenge of chasing a massive target of 345 runs, Pakistan ran into trouble early on, losing key wickets including those of Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam.
However, Abdullah Shafique's composure and talent came to the fore and became the turning point of the game. Along with the steadfast Mohammad Rizwan, Shafique played a crucial role in stabilizing the Pakistan innings.
