For many in Bangladesh, the idea of Bangladesh winning an ICC trophy is a luxury because the team has never done it. But skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto of Bangladesh has made a daring statement—his team would play for the championship—in the lead-up to the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy.

Bangladesh’s best result was the semi-finals in the Champions Trophy in 2017 which was also the Tigers' best achievement in an ICC tournament. Instead of settling on an aim for the final, Shanto and his team are going all out to win the championship this time around.

Speaking at the official press conference before the tournament, Shanto said confidently, "We are going with the goal of becoming champions."

However, Bangladesh captain feels no extra pressure. Instead, he believes his squad has the quality and determination to reach that stage.

"I don’t think of it as additional pressure. Every team in this tournament deserves to be here—they are all quality sides. But I truly believe we have the capability to become champions. No one in our team feels pressured; we all genuinely believe in our potential."

Shanto also spoke about the team's strong work ethic and belief. "We don’t know what Allah has written in our fate, but we are working hard with honesty and dedication. Every single player in our squad believes we can achieve our goal."

Bangladesh are in the highly competitive group alongside defending champions Pakistan, India and New Zealand.

Shanto also acknowledged the tough competition ahead but remained focused. "We are not worried about specific players like Bumrah. India are a strong team, but so are Pakistan and New Zealand. Every team in our group is well-balanced, and we will have to fight hard in every match."
