Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn has lauded Nepal for their outstanding performance in the thrilling match against South Africa during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. Despite South Africa securing a narrow 1-run victory, Steyn believes Nepal deserved to win the T20 World Cup Group D match.

In a heart-stopping encounter, Nepal nearly pulled off a stunning upset. Chasing a modest target of 116 runs, Nepal was restricted to 114/9 by South Africa's resilient bowling attack. The climax of the match saw Nepal needing just 2 runs off the final ball. Gulshan Jha sprinted towards the non-striker's end, aiming to take the match into a Super Over.

However, Heinrich Klaasen's quick reflexes and precise throw resulted in Jha being run out before his bat crossed the crease, leaving Nepal just short of a historic victory. The heartbreaking finish was a testament to Nepal's valiant effort and fighting spirit.

"It was incredible to watch. I think the match of the tournament, to be honest with you. I'm a big underdog fan, so, even being a South African, I was kind of like, 'Come on, Nepal.' You were spurring them on," Steyn said while analysing the match in a video posted by the ICC (International Cricket Council).

"These nail-biting thrillers, I saw people crying in the stands, it shows how much it means to people, and that’s what cricket is all about. Not the 200s, this is what the game is about. I think it would have been talk of the town, talk of the tournament, if Nepal had gotten over the line. It would have been fantastic. They almost deserve to win” he added.
