Domestic and T20 Franchise Career

Markram made his first-class debut for the Northerns cricket team against the South Western Districts on 9 October 2014. He was included in the Northerns cricket team's squad for the 2015 Africa T20 Cup. In 2016 Markram was a club professional for Walkden in the Bolton Cricket League.

In May 2017, Markram was named Domestic Newcomer of the Year at Cricket South Africa's annual awards. In August 2017, he was named to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stars roster for the inaugural season of the T20 Global League. However, in October 2017, Cricket South Africa initially postponed the tournament to November 2018, shortly after which it was cancelled.

In October 2018, Markram was called up to the Paarl Rocks squad for the first edition of the Mzansi Super League T20 tournament.

In March 2019, Markram signed for Hampshire County Cricket Club for the first part of the season as a foreign player. Later that same month, Markram scored 127 runs in the 2018–19 Momentum One Day Cup Finals to help the Titans win the tournament.

In September 2019, Markram was named to the Paarl Rocks team's roster for the 2019 Mzansi Super League tournament. In April 2021 he was called up to the Northerns squad ahead of the 2021/22 South Africa cricket season.

On 11 September 2021, Markram was included in the Punjab Kings squad for the second phase of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) in the United Arab Emirates. In February 2022 he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad at auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League Tournament.

International Career

In June 2017, Markram was named in South Africa's Test squad for their series against England but did not play. In August 2017 he was appointed captain of the South Africa A cricket team for the two four-day matches against India A.

In September 2017, Markram was called up to the South Africa Test squad for his series against Bangladesh. He made his Test debut for South Africa against Bangladesh on 28 September 2017.

After narrowly missing out on a first Test century on debut, Markram completed the feat in the second Test against Bangladesh on October 6, 2017, scoring 143 balls from 186 before being bowled out by Rubel Hossain.

In October 2017, ahead of the third game against Bangladesh, Markram was included in the One Day International (ODI) South Africa squad, replacing Hashim Amla. He made his ODI debut for South Africa on October 22, 2017 against Bangladesh, scoring 66 runs and taking 2 wickets.

In December 2017, Markram scored his second Test hundred and became the first South African player to score two centuries in his first three Tests.

2018-present

On 30 March 2018, Markram hit his career best of 152 runs on the first day of the fourth Test against Australia.
In June 2018, Markram was appointed to the South African Test Group for two series of tests in Sri Lanka.[37] Markram averaged just 10 points with the racquet in that series, his first overseas game for South Africa to show a vulnerability to spin bowling.

In August 2018, Markram was called up to South Africa's Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the one-off game against Sri Lanka, but did not play in the encounter. In March 2019 he was called up again to South Africa's T20I squad, this time for the series against Sri Lanka. He made his T20I debut for South Africa against Sri Lanka on 22 March 2019.

In April 2019, Markram was called up to South Africa's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

In August 2019, Markram was called up to South Africa's squad for the three Test series in India.[45] Markram struggled in the first two games of that series, sacking a pair in the second Test before being ruled out of the third due to a self-inflicted wrist injury. That streak raised further questions about Markram's overseas performances, who averaged just 10.50 in four away Tests, all on the subcontinent.

In December 2019, Markram was called up to South Africa's squad for the four Test home series against England. In the first Test, he hit 20 runs in the first innings and 2 in the second as South Africa beat England by 107 runs at Centurion. However, Markram missed the rest of the series after breaking his finger.

In January 2021, Markram was called up to the South Africa Test squad for his run against Pakistan. In the first test, Markram scored a patient with 74 points on a loss. In the second Test, Markram made his first century in over two and a half years and his first in Asia.[56] Markram finished the series as the top run scorer averaging 56.75, however South Africa lost the series, their first Test series loss to Pakistan since 2003.

Captaincy

In February 2018, South Africa captain Faf du Plessis was ruled out of the last five ODIs and the Twenty20 International (T20I) series against India because of a finger injury.

Career Statistics

Test Career

Aiden Markram played his first Test game against Bangladesh at the Potchefstroom in September 2017. In his first Test innings he was just three runs short of a ton in a game South Africa won convincingly. He won his first Test hundred in the next game of the series at Bloemfontein in October 2017 as his 143 helped his side to another dominant win. In his next game in Port Elizabeth in December 2017, he crushed Zimbabwe's bowlers for a 125 match win. Another 94 inning against India at Centurion in January 2018 helped South Africa to another win. Arguably his best Test innings to date came against Australia in Johannesburg in March 2018, when Markram's 152 of 216 balls helped South Africa to an impressive 488. Australia responded with 221 and South Africa reinforced their position in the game with 344/6 declared in their second innings.

Australia were thrown out for 119 in their second innings to give South Africa a 419-run win, one of their widest margins. Since those innings, however, Markram has not had a three-digit stroke, although he has recorded some useful numbers such as 78 and 90 against Pakistan in January 2019 and 60 against Sri Lanka in February 2019, all of which helped South Africa to victory. Although Aiden didn't score many runs in his last game at Centurion in December 2019 against England, South Africa won that one too. In 20 Test matches, Aiden Markram has hit 1,424 runs with an average of 38.48, with a best batting performance of 154.

ODI Career

Aiden Markram scored a match-winning 66 in his first ODI in East London in October 2017 against Bangladesh. Interestingly, he turned his part-time bowling skills into good results, winning 2/18 in the game, including the scalp of Shakib al Hasan and Sabbir Rahman. South Africa won the game by a huge margin of 200 runs. In the next series against the visiting Indians, which took place in February 2018, he had some great starts of 32, 22, 32 and 24 that he unfortunately failed to convert into big innings. In fact, he started in most of the games he played then: 20 against Sri Lanka in August 2018; 27, 35, 42 v Zimbabwe in October 2018; 36, 19, 32 against Australia in November 2018.

In March 2019, he scored 20 and 67 points without an away game against the visiting Sri Lankans. The final innings in Cape Town were arguably Aiden Markram's most impressive ODI performance, allowing South Africa to win the game despite using the DL method. In a largely unforgettable 2019 World Championship, Markram hit 140 runs in eight games with an average score of 23.33 with the highest score of 45. In 26 ODI games, Markram hit 643 runs with an average score of 27.95 with the highest score of 67 did not fail . He also took three wickets at 44.00 with his best bowling figures of 2/18.

T20I career

Aiden Markram played his first T20I match at Centurion in March 2019 against Sri Lanka. It wasn't the ideal start he would have liked as he retired after just three runs. However, South Africa, who hit 180/3 first, won the match after holding Sri Lanka to 164/9 in their allotted overs. In the second game of the series in Johannesburg, Markram didn't fare much better, earning 15 runs before being dismissed. However, South Africa won that one too, amassing 198/2 in their 20 overs and bowling out Sri Lanka for 137. Markram was never considered for selection in the South Africa T20I squad again. In two T20I games played, Markram has hit 18 runs with an average of 9.00, with a best batting performance of 15.

Records

In his first Test series against Bangladesh in 2017, he hit 97 runs, the highest scoring by a South African batsman in his first Test innings.

He was the man of the match in the final of the 2014 U19 World Cup, scoring 370 runs in the tournament. He was also awarded the Man of Tournament.
