Australia is set to take on Pakistan in a three-match ODI series starting November 4, 2024, followed by three T20 matches. The series will be a crucial part of their preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy next year in Pakistan. The T20 squad for the tour is yet to be announced, but the ODI squad, revealed on Monday, brings back experienced players Pat Cummins and Marcus Stoinis.
The 14-player squad will be captained by Pat Cummins and marks Australia's final ODI series before the Champions Trophy. Notably, Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head are missing from the squad as both players are on paternity leave, leaving opportunities for young players like Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matthew Short to shine at the top of the order.
Cameron Green's absence is a significant blow for Australia, as the all-rounder has been ruled out of action for six months due to a back stress fracture. He is set to undergo surgery, meaning he will miss the Champions Trophy and upcoming Test series against India and Sri Lanka.
Chair of Selectors George Bailey commented on the squad selection, saying, "This is our last ODI series before the Champions Trophy, and the balance of the squad was focused on that, as well as continuing to focus on individual preparations for the Test summer"
Bailey added, "The one-day side had a great result in the UK, particularly given illness and injury challenges. We view this as an opportunity to expand on that achievement in preparation for next February in Pakistan"
Bailey also expressed excitement about the squad's potential, particularly following the strong performances seen in the Sheffield Shield season. He believes the upcoming series will be a great platform for players to continue their form.
