Hosts Netherlands managed 195 all-out in 50 overs after electing to bat first in the series opener. The start was jolted by left-arm pacer Josh Little, whose three quick wickets got Netherlands down to 53/5 from 51/1.
Bas de Leede (21 off 59) and Saqib Zulfiqar (23 off 54) put on a watchful 49-run stand to settle down the collapse. However, both departed in successive overs - 32nd ans 33rd - to leave the team score down to 102/7.
Then arrived Timm van der Gugten at nine to add crucial 72 runs with Logan van Beek. van der Gugten fell short of a maiden ODI half-century, but he struck 4 sixes and a four in his 53-ball 49 runs. van Beek made 29 from 48.
Seamer Craig Young took three wickets for Ireland as well. Spinners Simi Singh and Andy McBrine took one each.
In reply, van Beek made early inroads setting Ireland at 11/3, sending veteran William Porterfield (5) and skipper Andrew Balbirnie (4) back in the hut. Ireland lost their fourth wicket on 43 runs and the fifth on 69, but Paul Stirling remained as their mainstay.
Ireland looked in comfortable position as long as Stirling and Singh stayed. The pair added 66 runs before falling into trouble again.
Stirling departed making 69 off 112 with 8 boundaries, while Singh lost partners at the end.
The equation came down to 12 runs off six balls. Singh got run out on the first ball of the over after making 69-ball 45 runs. van Beek kept his cool to defend a the scure and take his side to win in a nail-biter.
With three needed off the last ball, Little could only manage a bye-run.
