India's experienced fast bowler Mohammed Shami didn't feature in India's first four games in this edition's ICC ODI World Cup 2023 tournament. The Indian team management gave him the chance to feature against the New Zealand cricket team at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
Mohammed Shami registers 5/54 against New Zealand.Mohammed Shami made a terrific comeback in the World Cup as he took a wicket on his first ball of the marquee tournament to dismiss Will Young. Besides that, he went on to dismiss Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry and Daryl Mitchell to account for five dismissals.
Mohammed Shami couldn't be any happier upon making a solid statement with the ball in his first match of World Cup 2023. In the end, he registered 5/54 in his quota of 10 overs at an economy of 5.40. In the process, he created a new record in ODI World Cup tournaments.
Shami etched his name into the record books after he became the first Indian bowler to take two five-wicket-hauls in ODI World Cups, which is quite a magnificent achievement. Shami's bowling performance helped India restrict New Zealand to 273.
On the other hand, Team India chased down the target with two overs to spare. India won the game by four wickets and registered five wins on the trot. With this special win over New Zealand, India moved to the top of the points table and are the only team that remains unbeaten in this competition.
Notably, Shami was named the Man of the Match for his spectacular bowling performance. "Got a lot of confidence after taking a wicket on the first ball. If your teammates are doing well, you should support them, it's important and I understand that. It was important to pick those late wickets, and you always want your team to be the top side. Very happy that I got those wickets," the paceman told the broadcaster after receiving the Player of the Match award.
