The ICC has awarded Sri Lankan batter Kamindu Mendis the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for September 2024, after a stellar run in Test cricket. Mendis edged out Australia's Travis Head and his teammate Prabath Jayasuriya to secure this honor, marking the second time he has won the award this year. On the women's side, England's Tammy Beaumont was named the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for her impressive performances during England's tour of Ireland.
Mendis has been in exceptional form in 2024, especially in Test cricket, and his performances in September were no exception. Across four Tests, he amassed 451 runs at an average of 90.20, playing crucial roles in Sri Lanka's ICC World Test Championship series against England and New Zealand. His dominant streak helped Sri Lanka in both away and home series, further solidifying his standing as one of the most promising batters in international cricket
On receiving the award, Kamindu Mendis expressed his joy and pride:
“I am honored to be once again chosen as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month. This accolade brings me immense happiness and pride, as I believe all the hard work that was put into becoming the player that I am today is starting to pay off and being recognized consistently on the global stage. This recognition gives me further strength to continue my good work on the cricketing field and aspire for bigger achievements, helping my team win games and bring glory to our country.”
This marks the second time Mendis has claimed the Player of the Month title in 2024, having previously been awarded the honor in March
On the women's front, England’s Tammy Beaumont claimed the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for September 2024. Beaumont was instrumental in England’s short-format success in Ireland, racking up 212 runs at an incredible average of 106 during a closely contested ODI series. She also contributed 67 runs in the T20Is, helping England secure victories with her strong performances at the top of the order.
Beaumont expressed her gratitude:
"Thank you to everyone who voted for me as ICC Women's Player of the Month for September. It was a great tour in Ireland with an inexperienced England team and it was really nice to contribute personally."
