England's top players, including Jason Roy, are considering the possibility of completing contract extensions with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in order to accept lucrative offers to play in the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) season in the United States.

England opener Jason Roy will end his contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to sign a full-time contract with Los Angles Knight Riders. The world champion opener has reportedly been offered a two-year deal worth around £300,000 (more than 2 crore 40 lakhs INR) by the Los Angeles Knight Riders and while he is yet to sign the papers, the cricketer seems interested.

Jason Roy's Surrey and England team-mate Reece Topley could also opt for the same move, although his choice may be influenced by his fitness following shoulder surgery last month.

MLC takes place from July 13th to 30th at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas and is heavily backed by India and Australia: four of the six franchises have investors owning IPL teams, while Cricket Victoria and Cricket New South Wales have stakes are the other two.

There is a minor collision with the English summer in the league's inaugural season: the semi-finals and finals of the T20 Blast take place on July 15, while two rounds of County Championship games are held between the finals day and the start of the Hundred on August 1 But there are concerns within English football that MLC is likely to expand in the future and could come directly into conflict with the Hundred.

Therefore, the ECB will not issue No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) that would allow contract players to participate in the MLC. And while the players are unlikely to negotiate a release from their full white-ball contracts to play in the US, such a move would make financial sense for those on staged contracts.

The ECB's supplementary contracts are worth around £66,000 a year and are effectively used to top up county salaries. Six players have such contracts for the 2022–23 contract cycle: Harry Brook, Dawid Malan, Matthew Potts, Roy, Topley and David Willey.
