Mumbai Indians (MI) top-order batsman Ishan Kishan says that India captain Virat Kohli has backed him to open the batting in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup and he’s in the World Cup squad as an opener.
He revealed this after their do or die match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) yesterday. MI won the match by 43 runs but were still out of the tournament due to poor run rate than Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
"A very good thing for me as well as for the team. Getting in good touch before the World Cup. Good state of mind is very important. I knew we are in a do-or-die situation. It was just the intent and the positive mindset. I haven't scored as many boundaries in the cover region this season.
“You have to be prepared for every circumstance. It's important to be in that mindset. I had a chat with Virat bhai, HP [Hardik Pandya], KP [Pollard] - they were all there. I would love to open, and that is what Virat bhai said. But at the bigger level, you need to be prepared for everything,”
Ishan Kishan said after the match.
The 23-year-old Kishan had been in poor form in this year’s IPL since the start. Even he was out of the main XI in some matches. But the team management again gave him chance in the last two league matches and Kishan showed his potential. He picked up two back-to-back half-centuries including the destructive innings of 84-run off just 32 balls against SRH yesterday.
Kishan has played 3 T20Is for India till now and scored 80 runs at an average of 40.00 with one fifty.
