Usman Khawaja's hundred after a lean summer and Steve Smith's yet another hundred were the personal highs, but it was Australia's batting dominance which was the highlights of day one in Galle.

Usman Khawaja and stand-in skipper Steve Smith put on a show in Galle as the duo stitched a massive 195*-run stand together to go through the stumps unscathed. After oping to bat first, Travis Head came with all the guns blazing. Head plundered three boundaries off the opening over to start the proceedings and he blasted a quick-fire fifty to give the Aussies a solid platform. Head and Khawaja added a massive 92-run opening stand before Head holing out to Prabath Jayasuriya on 57 off just 40 deliveries.

Marnus Labuschagne came in and was very composed at the start but he didn’t last long as Jaffrey Vandersay had him out. And then Steve Smith joined the veteran opener Usman Khawaja. Smith took only one delivery to reach to his 10,000 Test runs milestone and he never looked back since then.

He kept the scoreboard ticking and boundaries were flowing as he reached to his fifty quickly. However after the fifty, he shifted the mantra to his old mettle, remaining cool and composed.
