Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) announced their arrival in the IPL in the 2022 season. Apart from them, Gujarat Titans (GT) were the other team to make a IPL debut alongside them. In the last two seasons, both teams locked horns with each other on four occasions, with GT prevailing over LSG in all games.
LSG captain KL RahulDespite giving it all in these meetings, Lucknow-based franchise have often been on the receiving end. Nevertheless, KL Rahul and Co. have finally been able to get off the mark by registering their first-ever win over the Ahmedabad-based franchise. They managed to do so in their fifth meeting.
Batting first, LSG posted 163 for the loss of 5 wickets in their designated quota of 20 overs at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. Marcus Stoinis top-scored with 58 off 43 balls, laced with 4 fours and 2 sixes whereas Nicholas Pooran looked good for his 32 off 22 balls (3 sixes).
In response, GT failed to chase down the target as they were bowled out for 130 runs. Yash Thakur was the pick of the bowlers for LSG as he registered his maiden five-wicket haul, recording 5/30, which is the first fifer in IPL 2024. Yash Thakur was adjudged the Player of the Match for his scintillating bowling spell.
After the game, KL Rahul shed light on getting off the mark for the first time against GT. "We'll take the win, I am not going to make too much out of it (on defending totals). For the young bowling unit we have, it helps when we bat first. They get an idea how the wicket is playing and they've also been adapting really well. It's a good record to have (defending all 160+ totals), but it's also where we've played," he said.
Furthermore, he said, "Having the home advantage helps. The bowlers have come through the ranks over the last couple of years. you have seen the same guys bowling in the last season as well., They have adjusted to their roles. Hopefully we can continue this. Feels good to get off the mark there."
