Former Test opener Wasim Jaffer has cautioned Team India against the idea of resting their star pacer Jasprit Bumrah for their final group game in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. With India set to face Canada in their last group-stage match, Jaffer believes maintaining Bumrah’s rhythm is crucial for the team's success in the Super 8s phase.
India has already won a spot in the Super 8s thanks to their outstanding performances in their first three group matches. Jasprit Bumrah was vital in these triumphs, winning Player of the Match awards in both games against Ireland and Pakistan. As a result, there has been debate about resting Bumrah for the game against Canada to manage his workload.
"The more Bumrah keeps playing, the more he will be in rhythm. You do not want Bumrah to lose his rhythm, such an important player. So, I do not think it is needed to rest him," said Jaffer.
Jaffer also addressed the recent allegations that Team India is enjoying an undue advantage in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. These claims suggest that India has an edge because they already know their semifinal venue, should they qualify. However, Jaffer dismisses these allegations, emphasizing that performance on the day is what truly matters.
"Even when you know what venue you're going to play at, it doesn't matter. You have to perform well on the day. India have started their campaign in tough conditions in New York. You have brought four spinners but these are different conditions so definitely it is not an advantage," said Jaffer.
