Shimron Hetmyer has been brought back into the team for West Indies’ three-match ODI series against India. Pacer Oshane Thomas has also returned to the national team after a year and a half.

Thomas was dropped from the team mainly due to fitness issues. He last played competitive cricket in December 2022 in the Lanka Premier League (LPL). He has made his comeback to the national team after fixing his fitness.

Despite making himself available for selection, Hetmyer was not included in the West Indies' ODI World Cup Qualifier squad in May. This was because the team's management prefered to give the players who had done well in the preceding series more playing time. After losing four of their seven Qualifier matches, West Indies were eliminated from contention. In August of 2022, Hetmyer sat out the West Indies' home T20 International series against New Zealand. His final One-Day International came in Barbados against Australia in July of 2021.

"We welcome Oshane and Shimron back into the group. Both have played at the international level before, with some success, and we believe they will fit well into the set-up. Oshane brings pace and is a potential wicket-taker with the new ball. Shimron's style of batting will offer a lot especially in the middle stage of the innings and he is also a potential 'finisher',” chief selector Desmond Haynes said.

Two experienced cricketers Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder has not been considered for the ODIs against India as they are unavailable.

Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie is back after a lower-back injury, and fast bowler Jayden Seales and legspinner Yannic Cariah have returned from surgery and rehabilitation.

The first ODI match between the two teams is on July 27. The second match is on July 29. The venue for the first two ODIs is the same- Barbados. The last match of the series will be played in Trinidad on August 1.
