Former England captain Michael Vaughan praised Shubman Gill and said the youngster is the "new god" of Indian cricket.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan suggested that Shubman Gill could be the next icon in Indian cricket. Vaughan hinted at the prospect of Gill following in the footsteps of legendary players like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli in Indian cricket.

Vaughan made the comments during India's semi-final against Kane Williamson's New Zealand on Wednesday, November 15, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Michael Vaughan took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to praise Shubman Gill for his brilliant knock in the semi-final against New Zealand. Vaughan noted that the baton was passed from Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli and will now be handed over to Gill.

“The baton has been passed from @sachin_rt to @imVkohli. Feels like Virat will pass him on to @ShubmanGill as the next God of Indian cricket.”

Shubman Gill scored 79 runs off 65 deliveries at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday, November 15. He seemed to be in control throughout, hitting eight fours and three sixes. However, when he withdrew from the field due to cramps, he left the line.

Shubman Gill previously responded to the comparisons with legendary players like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He emphasized that the impact of these players goes beyond concrete victories and emphasized the timeless and immortal nature of their legacies.

“The generation that all these people - Sachin sir (Tendulkar) sir, Virat (Kohli) bhai, Rohit Sharma - have inspired is unimaginable. Had we not won the 1983 World Cup, would there have been a Sachin Tendulkar? No. If we hadn't won the 2011 World Cup, would I be as excited? Maybe, maybe not. Legacies like these are immortal, you can’t really define them,” Gill said.

The 24-year-old missed the first two games of the World Cup due to dengue fever. The opening batsman has scored 349 runs in 8 innings at a moderate average of 43.62 and an impressive strike rate of 108.05. He hit four half-centuries with a best score of 92 runs.
