Former India batsman Akash Chopra has expressed disagreement with the former openar Gautam Gambhir who recently claimed that MS Dhoni was very lucky as the captain while Sourav Ganguly had to work harder. Gambhir had also said that the presence of heavyweights made the job easy for Dhoni during a chat on Star Sports' Cricket Connected show.
While talking about cricket Ghambir said in an interview,
“Dhoni has been a very lucky captain because he got an amazing team in every format. Captaining 2011 World Cup team was very easy for Dhoni because we had players like Sachin, Sehwag, myself, Yuvraj, Yusuf, Virat, so he had got the best teams, while Ganguly had to work very hard for it, and as a result Dhoni won so many trophies,”.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said that he disagrees with Gambhir and as per him, Dhoni too had a difficult task although none of the two former captains has reacted to Gambhir's statement. He also heaped praise on Ganguly, who took over the captaincy in difficult times.
“He is absolutely right that Sourav Ganguly gave a lot of match-winners to India. Dada even took over captaincy when cricket was in difficulty due to the black clouds of match-fixing hovering over it and the public’s belief lost. From that situation to develop a team that went abroad and won, the eye for talent was absolutely fantastic,”
Chopra said.
“In my opinion, Dhoni’s task was very difficult and a person like Dhoni was only required there, who could manage the team tactically with care and also manage the transition. According to me, it is a wrong comparison and it is a slightly incorrect outcome as well. I personally don’t agree with the opinion, I feel the team that Kohli got was assembled with great love by MS Dhoni,”
the 42-year-old added.
