If Afghanistan's standout spinners Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmed can keep their form up in the Indian conditions, former England spinner Graeme Swann believes they have the best opportunity to win the ODI World Cup later this year.
The Afghan spin duo of Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad, both of whom play for the Gujarat Titans in the current season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), have proved a major threat to their opponents. In IPL 2023, Rashid and Noor have shared the load and collected 30 wickets between them. Although Rashid is a more well-known name in the IPL, Gujarat captain Hardik Pandya has shown faith in Noor, who is only 18, and this has paid dividends for the reigning champions.
Swann, an IPL expert with the official digital broadcaster Jio Cinema, recently spoke with select members of the media and made a stunning forecast predictionthe Afghan spin twins.
"Every nation should be jealous that India have so many good wrist spinners in the country. The only nation that shouldn't be jealous is Afghanistan. Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad are possibly the best two bowlers in the world currently. Afghanistan can win the World Cup if they keep going," Swann said.
With Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi, Qais Ahmed, and Zahir Khan among their spin bowling options, Afghanistan stands a good chance of making an impact at this year's ODI World Cup. This is especially true given the rise of global T20 leagues, which give Afghanistan's players the chance to play alongside top players from around the world.
