Jason Roy has turned down the chance to return to England for two games against Ireland, increasing doubts over his international future.

Jason Roy has turned down the chance to play for England's second-best team in the ODI series against Ireland after being left out of the final World Cup squad at the last minute and suffering a "hammer blow".

Somerset's Tom Kohler-Cadmore was officially named as Joe Root's replacement for the second and third games of the Metro Bank Series on Thursday, with the latter taking a planned break ahead of next month's World Cup, but it is understood Roy will take the place has rejected.

Roy was named in England's preliminary 15-man squad last month but was not fit enough to feature in the four-match ODI series against New Zealand as he suffered back spasms on the mornings of two of the four matches. He was replaced in the squad by Harry Brook on Sunday.

Luke Wright, England's national selector, said on Monday that Roy had been "given the option to play against Ireland" but made it clear that his decision would have no impact on his status as England's "top reserve" for the World Cup he would be on standby at home in the event of an injury to Jonny Bairstow or Dawid Malan.

The veteran opener was mercilessly left out of the squad for next month's World Cup despite being named in the provisional list of 15 after he was also dealt a second major blow by the T20 side on the eve of the short-form World Cup last year .

He missed the recent series against New Zealand with back spasms, which paved the way for Dawid Malan and Harry Brook to keep him from traveling to India, but England had not closed the door on the 33-year-old and invited him to the opener with the shadow group that played on Saturday and Tuesday against the Irish.

National selector Luke Wright also hinted that Roy would be considered a first-choice reserve player for the World Cup should there be injuries to the top three players, but admitted there was uncertainty over the player's state of mind.

By sitting out the upcoming games at Trent Bridge and Bristol, Roy is allowing others to make the case for his absence, which could be like a tacit admission that his own time is up.

He had already predicted that after the World Cup there would be a "changing of the guard" in England's aging squad and that a permanent place in the lucrative franchise could now beckon.
