Nick Hockley, CEO of Cricket Australia (CA), has compared the forthcoming five-Test series between India and Australia to the Ashes in terms of economic impact. India's first Test match is set to take place on November 22 at the Perth Stadium, marking the beginning of a five-match series. Notably, the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) has been a fun series to watch in Australia this century, with India taking home the trophy in the 2018–19 and 2020–21 seasons, respectively.

In the 2019–2020 and 2020–21 Border–Gavaskar series played in Australia, India came out on top. The 2023 home series versus Australia was likewise won by them, by a score of 2-1. India are now leading the WTC points table, with Australia in second position, as we approach the forthcoming series.

“The Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the Ashes are both massive tours on the Australian cricket calendar and are largely comparable in commercial terms, with fantastic crowds and huge broadcast audiences for each. Ticket sales from India are already six times greater than for the previous non-COVID series,” Hockley told in an e-mail interview to Hindustan Times.

There have been rumblings of dissatisfaction in Australian cricket circles regarding the distribution of softer pitches to crowd-pleasing teams like India. India hadn't won a Test series in Australia since 2003 (a span of three straight losses) until 2018. While denying the rumors, Hockley addressed the Indian team's use of "softer pitches" in their games.

“Australia’s iconic cricket venues each have their own unique pitch characteristics and conditions, which is what makes the series so intriguing, including, in more recent years, the introduction of the day-night Test,” Hockley said, sidestepping the pitch debate.

In particular, the forthcoming series between the two nations will be historic because it will be the first time since 1991–1992 that both sides will play five Tests. Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney will host the next four Tests beginning on November 22. India will face the Prime Minister's XI in a two-day match at the Manuka Oval before the series starts, in order to prepare for the day/night Test in Adelaide.
