England reached stumps at 111/2 trailing by 267 after bowling the Kiwis out for 378 earlier in the day.
The day went to Conway again as like the first day of the first Test match. The New Zealand left-hander celebrated another couple of milestones on the second day. Conway and Henry Nocholls started the day very positively as they both were looking good.
But all on a sudden, in help of Mark Wood’s fiery spell, the visitors lost 4 wickets for just 6 runs and the scorecard went from 288/3 to 294/3. Wood took 3 wickets in that spell. New Zealand lost another 2 wickets after that in quick succession.
At the other end, the debutant Conway fought alone for his team. With his team at 338/9 and only the tail for company, Conway started to play his strokes. Tail-ender Neil Wagner gave him proper support and put on an entertaining 40-run partnership off just 33 balls.
Conway was the last batsman to get out after being the only 7th batsman in Test cricket history to hit a double ton on debut. He scored 200 runs off 347 balls with 22 fours and a six. Another debutant pacer of England, Ollie Robinson was the standout bowler for his team with 4 wickets.
Then, England started their first innings very shakily as they lost Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley early. Two pacers- Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson both took wicket apiece with the new ball. But later on, Burns and Root passed the whole day without taking any risks which helped England to end the day in a balanced position. Burns and Root were unbeaten on 59 and 42 runs consecutively.
