Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar expressed strong disappointment with Virat Kohli and India’s top-order batters for their lack of patience during the third Test against Australia in Brisbane. Chasing a massive first-innings score of 445, India’s batting lineup crumbled under pressure, with Kohli dismissed for just three runs after playing a loose shot.
The incident occurred on Day 3 when Kohli chased a wide delivery from Josh Hazlewood, only to edge it to wicketkeeper Alex Carey. Gavaskar, speaking on Channel 7, criticized Kohli’s decision to play at a ball that was well outside the off-stump.
"If it was on the fourth stump I could understand," Gavaskar stated. “This was wide, on the seventh, eighth stump, you could say. There's no need to play that.”
Kohli’s dismissal added to his poor run in Test cricket, where he has managed only three centuries in the last four years. His Test average this year stands at 25.06 after 17 innings. The star batter's shot selection was particularly disappointing given India had already lost openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill to poor shots earlier in the innings.
“He'd be very, very disappointed, he'd be very upset with that. Even before Rishabh Pant faced a ball, the rain started to come down and the covers have come on. If Kohli had shown a bit of patience he could be not out with KL Rahul,” said Gavaskar.
Gavaskar also criticized India’s top-order batters for their impatient approach against Australia’s disciplined bowling attack.
"Look at how Jaiswal threw away his wicket. When you have such a tough challenge ahead of you, you need to be patient and refrain from playing such shots. You cannot score 445 in half an hour, or even 245 runs – required to avoid the follow-on – in that time period. Shubman Gill chased a ball outside off, and so did Virat Kohli, which was unnecessary. So, there was no role of the pitch. They just played poor shots."
