Right-hand batsman Shubman Gill was admitted to a hospital in Chennai after his platelet count dropped. According to report, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team is also monitoring his condition.

Star India opener Shubman Gill, who has been battling dengue fever for the past few days, has been hospitalized in Chennai and will not travel to Delhi to take part in India's second World Cup match against Afghanistan. Gill's platelet count has reportedly been low for some time and he has been advised to avoid boarding a flight.

Gill missed India's first 2023 World Cup match against Australia due to dengue fever and is now expected to take part directly in India's third match. The opener, who was admitted to Kaveri Hospital in Chennai, is being examined by BCCI doctor Dr. Rizwan Khan, who travels with the team, is in charge.

The opening batsman, who missed the team's first match of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai, is expected to miss the team's next match against Australia." On the eve of India's opening match against Australia, team captain Rohit Sharma had said he wanted the batsman to recover from his illness and was not thinking about whether he would play or not.

The prolific Indian opener had a sensational run in the ODI format in 2023 and was a safe selection in India's XI for World Cup matches before his health sidelined him for two matches. In Gill's absence, Ishan Kishan was at the helm against Australia along with Rohit Sharma. However, both openers failed terribly in India's opening game of the World Cup as they chased a meager target of 200 runs.

The ship was steadied by resilient batting from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul after India initially fell at 2/3 but then registered a six-wicket win. India will play their second match against Afghanistan on September 11 in Delhi and will look to continue their winning ways in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
