The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed significant penalties on both the Pakistan and Bangladesh cricket teams for maintaining a slow over-rate during the first Test at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

Pakistan have been docked six World Test Championship (WTC) points and fined 30% of their match fee for being six overs short of the target, while Bangladesh, despite their historic 10-wicket victory, lost three WTC points and were fined 15% of their match fee for falling three overs short.

Ranjan Madugalle, from the Emirates ICC Panel of Elite Match Referees, imposed the sanctions after accounting for time allowances. As per ICC regulations, players are fined 5% of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl within the allotted time, and teams lose one WTC point for each over short. Captains Shan Masood of Pakistan and Najmul Hossain Shanto of Bangladesh accepted the penalties without contesting, thus avoiding formal hearings.

In a separate incident, Bangladesh's star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was fined 10% of his match fee and received a demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the same match. Shakib was found guilty under Article 2.9 for throwing the ball in an inappropriate manner at Pakistani wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan during the second innings. Shakib admitted to the offense, leading to an immediate sanction without the need for a hearing.

The penalties have impacted the WTC standings, with Bangladesh dropping to seventh place and Pakistan remaining in eighth. This setback could have significant implications for both teams as they strive to reach the WTC final.
