Sri Lanka have beaten Netherlands and opened up their account for the first time in this world cup. They have crushed Netherlands by 5 wickets and 10 balls to spare on Saturday (21st October). Dilshan Madhushanka and Kasun Rajitha shared 4 wickets each before Nissanka and Samarawickrama hit fifties to take Sri Lanka home.
Sadeera Samarawickrama made an unbeaten 91* off just 107 balls to take Sri Lanka home comfortably and hand them their first victory in this edition of world cup.
Earlier, Netherlands after opting to bat first. They were marginalised for 71-5. With Rajitha breathing fire at the top with new ball in hand. He first trapped Vikramjit Singh for LBW, then knocked over Max ODowd for 16 off 27 balls, and then removed number three batter Ackermann. And then Dilshan Madushanka started to show his worth and he ripped through the dutch middle order in a flash.
Netherlands were stuttering for 91-6 with losing their talismanic skipper Scott Edwards. But then the dutch scripted an all time great comeback. The lower order duo of Sybrand Engelbrecht and Logan Van Beek notched up a 130 run stand at 7th wicket partnership.
Synrand Engelbrecht made a glorious 70 off just 82 balls and Van Beek scored 59 from 75 balls. Their collective efforts helped Netherlands post 262 on the board despite a disastrous start.
In reply, Sri Lanka started nicely. Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis got out cheaply but Pathum Nissanka held one end and scored a fine 54 off just 52 deliveries. Sadeera Samarawickrama was playing an innings of his life. He alone obliterated the hopes of Netherlands. He made an unbeaten 91* off just 107 balls and took Sri Lanka home by 5 wickets and 10 balls to spare. Also this is their first victory in the world cup so far. Samarawickrama was cool as cucumber and got some aid from Charith Asalanka who scored 44 and Sri Lanka chased down the moderate total as ease.
