After the recently concluded ICC ODI World Cup final between India and Australia, seven students from Jammu and Kashmir were taken into custody for celebrating India's defeat.

This was a startling turn of events. After India was defeated in the final match, which took place on November 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the students were allegedly heard screaming shouts that were both anti-nationalist and pro-Pakistani.

Students from Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) have been arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), a statute that has been judged to be oppressive by a number of different rights organisations.

Given this information, the persons in question will be subject to a maximum sentence of seven years in jail, a fine, or both. The seven individuals were taken into custody after an official complaint was lodged against them by a different student. The complaint said that they had been celebrating India's loss and applauding for Australia as well as Pakistan.

They were watching a television broadcast of India playing versus Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in the western state of Gujarat on November 19, according to a senior police official in Indian-administered Kashmir who spoke with Al Jazeera. The source stated that there was a confrontation between the accused and several students who were not members of the local community.

“A non-local student submitted a written complaint naming the seven Kashmiri students for abusing and threatening him and raising pro-Pakistan slogans. On the basis of the complaint, the case has been registered under the UAPA,” he said.
