India captain Rohit Sharma has registered multiple records during their second match in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup against Afghanistan on Wednesday (October 11) in Delhi.
Rohit beat Chris Gayle's record for the most international sixes in ODIs. He did this by surpassing Gayle's total. Former West Indies batter Gayle had recorded a total of 553 sixes over the course of 551 innings; Rohit was able to exceed this total in just 473 innings.
Rohit played an explosive innings of 131 runs off just 84 balls and ensured India’s win by 8 wickets. It was Rohit’s 7th century in the ODI World Cup, which was the highest by any player, surpassing the six hundreds that Sachin Tendulkar scored. Rohit scored four of his seven hundreds while chasing the target, whereas no other batters scored more than two hundreds when batting second.
Rohit played only 63 balls to get his century against Afghanistan, making it the quickest hundred scored by an Indian player in the men's ODI World Cup. The previous record was held by Virender Sehwag, who reached a century against Bermuda in 2007 by playing 81 balls throughout his innings.
19 innings were required for Rohit to score 1000 runs in the ODI World Cup, making him the joint-fastest batsman to reach the milestone. This puts Rohit on par with David Warner, who also reached the milestone in 19 innings, doing so on Sunday while playing against India.
